Nuclear Waste Scholar Series

  • Hanford Challenge P.O. Box 28989 Seattle, WA 98118 United States (map)

Join us on Friday, November 13th at noon PT for our next virtual webinar series. Dr. Daniel Metlay will present Part One of Becoming a Responsible Ancestor.

Daniel will trace the development of the U.S. effort to construct a deep-mined, geologic repository for long-term storage of high-activity radioactive wastes. The discussion begins with the creation of radioactive waste in 1945 as part of the Manhattan Project and ends with the demise of the Yucca Mountain repository project more than a decade ago. The bottom-line take-away from this discussion is: The United States, with the largest inventory of high-activity radioactive waste, is the only pluralist democracy with no plans for the material's long-term disposition. It is thus an irresponsible ancestor.

Funded in part by a Public Participation Grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology.
