WHAT: Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board Meeting -  The Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board serves as the focal point for all policy discussions within the state government concerning the disposal of high-level radioactive waste in the northwest region; the board recommends a state policy to the Governor and the Legislative Assembly; and makes policy recommendations, after consultation with the Governor, on other issues related to the Hanford Site in Richland, Washington, including defense wastes, disposal and treatment of chemical waste, and plutonium production.

The meetings are open to the public and the public is encouraged to attend and participate. At the meetings, representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy, contractors, Washington Department of Ecology, Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board staff, and other state and federal agency representatives brief the Board about a wide variety of issues associated with the Hanford Site.  Hanford Challenge will be presenting at the upcoming meeting in Hood River.

WHAT:  Environmental and Residential Sampling Trip - Hanford Challenge, in collaboration with Marco Kaltofen of Boston Chemical Data and the Yakama Indian Nation will be collecting samples of residential dust from houses and workplaces in Richland, Kennewick and Pasco, as well as in Sunnyside, WA, from the Yakama Indian Nation, and from other locations downwind of the site. The immediate goal of the study is to establish whether or not residual radioactivity from Hanford’s operation is present in places where people live and work – as opposed to the ambient environment.

Hanford has never undertaken such a sampling and analysis program, and we think it is an
obvious and important study to implement. The result of our study will be a peer-reviewed
paper in a scientific journal that has significant potential for fostering awareness and action on a public health issue related to the government’s operation of the plutonium factories at Hanford.

* * HELP NEEDED: If you are interested in helping us with this sampling trip we are looking for further financial assistance as well as individuals who are willing to let us sample in their home or workplace. Please contact Liz Mattson at lizm@hanfordchallenge.org to inquire about how you can help! * *
