Who We Are

Tom Carpenter is the Executive Director of the Hanford Challenge.  He brings decades of experience in organizing, litigating, and policy oversight in the nuclear field, much of it devoted to Hanford.  He is an attorney, and has a Masters in Organizational Design and Renewal from Seattle University.

Tom worked as the Director of the Nuclear Oversight  Campaign for the Government Accountability Project from 1985 to 2007.  He has hosted a radio show, served on the Cincinnati Mayor's Environmental Advisory Council, and visited dozens of nuclear sites in the U.S. and Russia.

Tom worked with officials and managers to help establish the Hanford Concerns Council  (and its predecessor, the Hanford Joint Council) to mediate and resolve difficult and complicated issues relating to Hanford.

Tom has investigated and advocated on behalf of numerous whistleblowers and workers at various nuclear sites around the country, including both commercial and military nuclear production facilities, such as Los Alamos, Knolls Atomic Power Lab, Pantex, Lawrence Livermore, Fernald, Mound and many others.

Meredith Crafton, Investigation and Events

Meredith graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst, MA in 2004 with a BA in Sustainability Studies and Social Justice. Throughout college she worked for the Civil Liberties and Public Policy Program as Assistant Conference Coordinator and Student Group Coordinator. Meredith moved to the Pacific Northwest due to her love of the mountains and water and to continue her work for social and environmental justice.

She worked for the Government Accountability Project’s Seattle office as an assistant to the Nuclear Oversight Program coordinating Russia programs and assisting with West Coast fundraising efforts and conference coordinating.

Meredith is excited to continue putting her passion for her work to good use and to work towards her desire to improve the state of the world, beginning with the challenge here in Washington.  In addition to her activist work with Hanford Challenge, Meredith spends much of her time jumping rope.  She is an instructor and performer with “Ropeworks” and a part of an acrobatic jump rope performance group.  Her troupe does special events locally as well as occasionally performing in international special events for Cirque du Soleil.  Two of Meredith’s dreams are to see the world’s nuclear waste cleaned up and to be able to fully run away with the circus.

Liz Mattson, Outreach and Inreach

Liz comes to Hanford Challenge after a year of service as a Domestic Violence Victim's Advocate through JustServe AmeriCorps.  While new to nuclear issues, Liz's creativity and fresh perspective on organizational and personal interaction make her a crucial member of the team.

Liz is involved in the Seattle Contact Improvisation dance community.  Building meaningful connections and finding common ground through issues that divide us is essential.
